| Liner Notes (That I couldn’t afford to include!) The song I am most proud of here musically is “(I Can Stand Again) Walk on By” because Jamie and I really tried to experiment with layering of the vocals and the saxophone. He and I were the only two on this recording project. I was very limited financially so we did the best we could with just the two of us. At the bridge there is a part where I am actually layered six times and at the end of the song, Jamie is really pulling off some fantastic horn parts. We also experimented with a “telephone” effect for my voice at the bridge. I think we had a lot of fun putting this song together. When I performed this during my first solo concert, it was the last and it was the best song performed. I had four fantastic back up singers and decided to add some vocal parts to the song which really gave it even more of a groove. One day I hope to have a recorded “live version” of the song as well! My sentimental and vocal favorite is “You Are My Heart”. I love the background vocals on this one and could sing them all day! I enjoyed laying down those tracks. We would sit and just listen to them without the lead vocals. It puts you in a real groove. It was Jamie’s idea to put the keyboard solo in the very beginning. I originally wrote the song to remain the same tempo but he convinced me that this would be interesting and it is! The very first song recorded was “Eleanor Rigby”. I was about ready to give up on music as a whole and decided I wanted to record a song for posterity anyway. Eleanor Rigby is one of the best written songs I’ve ever encountered which tackles the theme of loneliness and it touched my heart in a very big way. I wanted to capture vocally the depth of how loneliness can make one feel. I do say, “I look” instead of “ah look” on purpose because I wanted to personalize my view of Eleanor Rigby and Father McKenzie. When I sing it, I can see them both in their own little worlds trying to find a way to cope. It is a very powerful song. As we began recording I was inspired to write “Do What You Love” which was recorded next. I had a little four track recorder and I used it to develop a structure for each song. I didn’t have a mixer for it or speakers so I had to do everything through headphones. Crude, but it worked. Writing “Do What You Love” was my way of coming to terms with the musical side of me that I’d been trying to bury for many years. It gave me the strength to keep pushing on. “Our Day Will Come” was one of the first songs I ever heard that I absolutely fell in love with and it was a song I vowed I would record one day. Ruby and the Romantic’s version is still my favorite, but I just wanted to do my own spin as well. The thing I am proudest of with this song is that I did it one take. It will never happen again but at least I can say I did it once! The CD has only five songs because I just plain ran out of money! (Smile) I’m very happy to have recorded it. Jamie Peck is one heck of a producer and engineer! He has an absolutely fantastic studio built into his home in Wheeling, West Virginia. Jamie does a lot of scoring work for major networks and is a genius on the keyboards. It was an honor and a pleasure to work with him! Please enjoy the CD and know that there is more to come! |
